Rebecca West dreamed in history instead of rain forests.The boneyards of culture were her stamping grounds. Which isn’t to say that she didn’t imagine things, even when she wasn’t writing fiction.

Religion, especially, brought out the fruitcake in her. In her 1941 masterpiece, Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, she imagined a Turk under every bed in the Balkans. [link to pdf]
